The 15-minute city is a term coined in 2016 by Carlos Moreno, scientific director and professor specialising in complex systems and innovation at University of Paris.
The idea at its core is that cities should be designed – or redesigned – so that residents are able to access their daily needs (housing, work, food, health, education, and culture and leisure) within the distance of a 15- minute walk or bike ride.
The model supports a decentralised city and a modal shift away from private vehicles, which at the same time reduces the use of fossil fuels and increases the quality of life for citizens to ultimately have a more tranquil existence.
The model does not call for a return to village life, however. Instead, the 15-minute city is a decidedly urban theory that heralds urban life with all its advantages: vibrancy, creativity, diversity, innovation, active citizenship, and technology used for the common good. The 15- minute city model reintroduces the qualities of older cities, adapted to contemporary lifestyles.
In a few short years, Newstead has firmly planted itself as the epicentre of Brisbane’s lifestyle peninsula. Bordered by the most prestige suburbs in the city (Teneriffe and New Farm), it is a beacon for creative professionals, and those who want to be within walking distance to everything that Brisbane has to offer.
Before Newstead established itself as a sought-after address and one of the coolest neighbourhoods in Australia, it was teeming with heavy industrial activities and a rich, storied past.
From the heyday of wool exporting through the network of wharves, to QLD’s oldest surviving house, and the bustling scene of the Gasworks. The areas facelift being experienced in the now-era is adding to its history, propelling the suburb from its industrious past towards a future that will redefine the upmarket lifestyle suburb as a whole.
Newstead has ample connections to commuter Bus services, bike & walk tracks that lead into he CBD, the ICB and Clem 7 tunnels, and ferries along the Brisbane River.
The neighbourhood buzzes with activity, and is known as a wellness Hub. Everything from Fitness studios, to some of the best cafes and restaurants within the city are walking distance.
